My name is Laura, and I'm a proud international student at James Cook ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ, pursuing a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at JCU Townsville. While I am originally from Austria and Sweden, I grew up all around the world and often heard fascinating stories about Australia from my family and friends. I always knew that someday I would love to make the move ‘Down Under’! My father studied at JCU some 26 years ago, and when he showed me around the campus, I knew that this was the place for me to pursue my university dreams.
I chose to study biomedical sciences because JCU's program is renowned for its immersive approach, setting it apart from other universities. This degree is truly hands-on, and we spend a significant amount of time in the lab, working with microorganisms, DNA/RNA, human and animal tissues. This approach has provided me with a deep understanding of the scientific foundations of the medical field. Throughout my degree, I've had the privilege of engaging in high-quality lab work and being exposed to cutting-edge technology, which has prepared me well for a future career in research.
JCU offers so much more than just the world-class education it is known for; it welcomes you with open arms and becomes a home away from home. There is a lot to gain here, from days spent exploring the beautiful rainforests and reefs to long-lasting friendships forged during late-night study sessions at the library. The people and places I have gotten to know here will be with me forever.
During my time here, I have had the privilege of welcoming new students, just as I was welcomed here by those before me. Serving as a Student Ambassador has afforded me the opportunity to explore various parts of Queensland, engage with high school students about their dreams and aspirations for the future, and be a supportive guide to new international students.
Balancing my academic pursuits with engaging social activities like the dive and yoga clubs, as well as the weekly international café gatherings, has made my time here immensely enjoyable. It has also been a fantastic way to connect with like-minded individuals from all corners of the globe.
In retrospect, I couldn't be happier with my choice to traverse the world to study at JCU. If you're considering taking that bold step to explore the abundant opportunities this university has to offer, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. Your journey here could be just as rewarding as mine.
